Irene Wellington was born Irene Bass in Lydd, Kent in 1904, where her father was a farmer. She studied art at Maidstone School of Art 1921-1925, and first learnt lettering there under Arthur Sharp. Edward Johnston (1872-1944), calligrapher and designer, was born in Uruguay on 11 February 1872, and educated privately. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University, 1896-1897, but was forced to leave due to his health. After studying the pen shapes of letters in early manuscripts at the British Museum, 1898-1899, he taught the first classes in Formal Penmanship and Lettering at the London County Council Central School, 1899-1912.
